Introduction

The world of psychedelic stoner rock is a vast one, full of incredible music that can give you a trip without the use of any illegal substances. Join us as we explore this genre, from its origins to some of the best bands in it.

Some of the Bands we present are not directly labeled as Stoner or Psychedelic, but they are somehow connected to the movement, and certainly, they incorporate hypnotic and dreamy sounds in their offerings.

Some of these are so good that it would have been a disservice to not include them here.

The Origins of Psychedelic Stoner Rock

Psychedelic stoner rock is a subgenre of rock psych music that combines elements of classic and modern psych, hard rock, and heavy metal. It typically features improvisation, extended guitar solos, and heavily distorted riffs. The genre originated in the late 1960s with bands such as the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream. From there, stoner rock psych evolved into a more distinct sound with bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Hawkwind, and Uriah Heep incorporating elements of blues-rock and progressive rock into their music.

In the 1980s and 1990s, psychedelic stoner rock was further developed by bands such as Kyuss, Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, Sleep, and Electric Wizard. These bands pushed the boundaries of what was possible within the genre by adding elements from doom metal, sludge metal, grunge, punk rock, and other styles. This gave rise to many classic albums including Stoner Witch (1994) by Monster Magnet and Dopesmoker (2003) by Sleep, both of which are considered to be seminal works within the genre.

Psychedelic stoner rock has since become a popular subgenre with its influence being heard in many different forms of music today including alternative metal and post-hardcore. Some popular current artists include Wolfmother (Australia), Clutch (USA), Red Fang (USA), Jex Thoth (USA), and Kadavar (Germany).

After releasing two more albums–1994’s Caravan Beyond Redemption (a live recording) and 1995’s Soul Sacrifice–Dorrian left the group due to creative differences with Griffiths; he was replaced by former Trouble vocalist David Wayne for 1997’s The Carnival Bizarre EP before returning himself for 1999’s Endtyme LP.
